Golden Hooves at Ravenna – Yes, We Mean Goats

October 1st, 2010 by admin, No Comments »

It’s true. Goats. Little ones, big ones and spotted ones.

Laura “Lou” Colby returned to Ravenna this week to provide her much needed services of goat-grazing. With over thirty years of experience in Holistic Resource Management, Lou  comes highly qualified to control unwanted weeds, brush and vegetation. Utilizing controlled grazing, she has developed successful techniques managing 900 acres of Leafy Spurge on a three ranch consortium … and now managing the 634 acres at Ravenna. The need for harsh chemicals or mowers is replaced with a safe, precise, fast, and natural method. Her grazing services benefit wildlife habitat, enviromental restoration and ecological conditioning, all top priorities at Ravenna. Lou protects her goats from danger with the help of her well-trained dogs and a solar powered electric fence.

You may think this is a new concept to unwanted weed control. It just might be. Although this is Ravenna’s second season in utilitizing Lou’s services, other big organizations such as Vanderbilt, Google and Yahoo have all adopted the same green approach: Goats Invade Vanderbilt Video

Aside from the fact that Lou’s family of goats have a tremendous impact on Ravenna’s land, they are adorable and well-loved by the members, residents and staff. Lou is one of the most hard-working and enjoyable people to be around. Each of us at Ravenna enjoy our drive throughout the community, never knowing where we will find Lou and her goats on any given day, but assured we will be greeted by their sweet baaa-aaa-ing chatter.

Welcome back, Lou! Thank you for being a part of the Ravenna family!

The Inaugural Ravenna Cup

September 24th, 2010 by admin, No Comments »

The inaugural Ravenna Cup matches (scheduled to be an annual event) were played on Saturday and Sunday September 18-19. The matches paired two teams made up of 7 members and 1 captain each. The members earned their way on to their respective teams by playing in the Saturday Men’s Games and participating in tournaments throughout the season. The race to get on the teams turned into a full sprint the in last weeks leading up to the deadline and there were a lot of moves made to get onto teams. As of September 4th the teams were set!

The pairings party on Friday night kicked off the weekend events. The Bucks, showing full respect for the game and the cup, showed up in Sport Coat and Tie leaving their competitors, The Sidewinders, a little dumbfounded and slightly intimidated. This would not be the only act the Bucks would pull off as a team. The Saturday pairings were set, and both captains, Seth Berliner for the Sidewinders and Jesse Piburn for the Bucks, felt very confident about their teams chances of victory.

Saturday brought the first day of matches, four foursomes matches with each match being worth a point.  The Bucks continued to impress with their team unity having breakfast together, walking to the practice tee together and hitting balls in a specially roped off area of the range marked by a large flag that represented both the Bucks and this great nation we live in.  The Saturday matches were close with three of the four going to the 18th hole.  After day 1, the teams were tied at two points a piece.

After play, the teams enjoyed lunch and the captains prepared for Sunday’s format of singles pairings.  Each player played a nine-hole match against each opponent in his group.  There was a lot of strategy involved when pairing the matches.

Sunday came and once again the Bucks showed their team spirit by having a team breakfast before warming up.  Both teams were focused on the task at hand and were excited to get the day going.  After the first nine holes, the Bucks took a 7-5 lead.  There were a lot of close matches again, but surprisingly there wasn’t a single halved match in any front-nine match.  The stage was set for drama on the back-nine.  The first group’s matches were both won by the 18th, by the Bucks.  Once Schossow and Fredericks closed out their matches on 15, the Bucks were victorious.  Champagne was popped behind 18 green in celebration as the last matches finished up.  It was a great two days of golf, especially for the victorious Bucks!

Here’s to 2011’s Ravenna Cup! Can the Buck’s retain the Cup or will the Sidewinders claim it for themselves? To be continued ….

Ravenna Member, Troy Reisner, with Retired Cherry Hills Country Club Golf Professional, Clayton Cole

Ravenna hosted its 4th-annual Pro-Member Invitational on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. This event included 16-PGA golf professionals from Colorado including Clayton Cole (Head Golf Professional Cherry Hills Country Club – retired), Don Hurter (Castle Pines Golf Club), John Ogden (Cherry Hills Country Club), and Ken Krieger (Cheyenne Country Club).

Tuesday hosted a practice round and a pairings party with the tournament beginning on Wednesday with a 9am shotgun. The winning team of Troy Reisner and Clayton Cole came in with a six-under par 65. After starting the round on #7 with bogey-par-double-par-bogey it seemed unlikely they would be in contention after the Hoos/Bolles team started birdie-par-par-eagle-par. But the team got hot playing the last six holes four under with an eagle on the day as well. Tied for second were Steve Nichols and Ken Krieger along with Andrew Turner and Bill Loeffler with rounds of 66.

The Golf Club at Ravenna hosted its 4th-annual Men’s Senior Championship. Before two-time winner Jack Quinlivan teed it up for the first day, he made the comment, “practice makes lucky.” Well by the end of the tournament he must have known more than the rest of the field as he claimed his third Senior Champion Trophy with a two day score of 77-81-158.  Shooting even for the front nine on day-one, Jack finished strong a with a 77. On day two Jack started the first four holes one-under par and finished with an 81. Quinlivan has been on top in multiple events this year as the champion of the Senior and Men’s Club Championships, the Couples Member-Guest, and the Couples Twilight along with his wife Jean.

The two-day event ended with new member, Joe Hubert coming in second, and a third-place tie between Pat Maloney and Bill Beck. As the season winds down there are a few more opportunities for “Q” to win including the Paradiso e Inferno, September 3rd, The Ravenna Cup September 18-19, (for those who qualify on points), and the closing day Member-Guest October 2nd.

Ravenna’s Artful Journey Class’ Newest Creation

August 25th, 2010 by admin, No Comments »

Ravenna’s Artful Journey art class last week created wonderful art using a combination of metal, paper and color.  Metal fish were created using different patterns etched on the back side of the metal.  Once all of the patterns were in place, they turned the metal over and added color to the various designs.  Colored paper was then added under the fish, and a half inch  border was created.  Mounting the fish to a colored poster board was the final touch!

2010 Bravado at The Golf Club at Ravenna

July 30th, 2010 by admin, No Comments »

The 2010 Bravado was full of fun and excitement once again.  The week started with the Calcutta on Wednesday leading to an evening filled with good ‘ole fashion male camaraderie.  There was a scotch tasting and complimentary cigars to keep the gents entertained for the majority of the night.

Thursday morning came earlier than some would have liked, as the first two rounds of matches were contested.  Food greeted the players as they came off the course for scoring.  Some of the usual suspects played well on day one along with a few newcomers.  Everyone left after golf to go home and put on their best Island Wear in preparation for the Luau.

An authentic Polynesian Luau was on the schedule for Thursday evening.  The weather was hot, but the patrons were greeted by a tropical cocktail served in a pineapple, what a treat!  Before the show began, everyone filled their plates with wonderful treats such as grilled Mahi Mahi, Pork, and Kobe Filets!  Once everyone was seated the show began led by a four-piece Polynesian Band.  The show was wonderful as the participants were treated to a four-part display of dances from different areas of Hawaii and Tahiti.  Some of the audience even had an opportunity to partake in the dancing, including the eventual Bravado Champion!!!  The evening was incredibly beautiful, filled with lots of laughter and great friendship.

Friday was another full day of golf, but the main difference from Thursday was the opportunity to win a 2010 BMW with a hole-in-one on #16.  Ravenna member, Ed Walker, was all set to repeat last years miraculous shot by going as far as wearing the EXACT same clothes he did the year prior when he holed the 216 yard shot to win the 2009 version of the BMW he now sports so proudly.  Unfortunately for him and everyone else in the field, there was no BMW given away this day.  After play the players had the opportunity to go through the mobile golf shop and select merchandise from Fairway & Greene, Zero Restriction, Antas Shorts, and Martin Dingman shoes.  After everyone finished their shopping, the day was done…as far as the Bravado was concerned.

The Hole-in-One Prize, BMW

Saturday brought some extremely close 5th round matches that determined who would play in the shootout.  The shootout began on hole #6 with defending champion Cliff D’Amato nearly making a hole-in-one to start things off.  When the shootout arrived at #17 there were four teams left.  Unfortunately two of the teams struggled greatly on the short par 4 and the final two teams were easily decided by the hole’s end.  The team of Tom Haverley and guest Rodney Hurlbut played well, but came third place overall, leaving Eric Schulze and guest Dale Chavez, last years runner up, against Andrew Turner and guest Mike Myers to determine the overall champion.

Both teams hit great tee shots down the middle of the fairway, then it got interesting…Schulze was first to hit from the fairway.  He hit a hybrid left, and it kept going left, out of bounds.  Chavez then stepped up to hit the team’s 4th shot and put a 3-wood just left of the green, but in the native grass, not looking good for the team who had come so close a year earlier. At this point, all the Turner/Myers team needed was to hit their next shot down the fairway and play safe; which didn’t exactly happen.  Myers hit a 9 iron left into the native grass.  Turner, after having his partner run up to check the lie of Schulze’s ball, decided to chip out to the fairway, which he did.  Myers had 100 yards left for their 4th shot, he hit just long over the green.  Both teams lie 4 around the green.

As doubt set in with the Turner team, as well as the gallery whether Schulze would be able to advance the ball from its position, Schulze hit an amazing shot high into the air that came down and rolled up to 5 feet from the hole.  Remarkable!  Now things were getting tight as Schulze’s team had a putt for 6 with Turner lying 4 just long of the green.  Turner took his time and executed a great chip shot that stopped about 3 feet from the hole.  Both teams made the short knee knocker and moved on to #1 for a sudden death playoff.

Schulze stepped up and hit a hybrid down to the end of the fairway.  Turner is next to play.  He was in disbelief as to how they hadn’t already won with Schulze being out of bounds on the previous hole, but that’s golf for you!  Turner hit a fairway wood right, out of bounds.  He, along with everyone else watching, could not believe what they had just witnessed.  With no other choice, Myers stepped up with his driver and knocked it on the green to about 10 feet, they would have a putt for 4, wow!

Chavez had a 40 yard shot for their second that he played well as the ball came to rest about 20 feet from the cup, they had a putt to win. After some friendly trash talk, and a lot of green reading Schulze was ready to hit the putt.  He took his stance over the ball, took a deep breath, and stroked the putt.  It had a great line and great speed and went in for birdie, center cut, to win the 2010 Bravado!  Schulze gives a Mickelson-like display jumping into the air and giving a fist pump before hugging his partner, then taking congratulations from Turner and Myers.  What an end to a great shootout!

Schulze and Chavez reading their last putt to win

The awards dinner on Saturday night was welcomed … all tension and nerves were a distant memory. The Club was filled with laughter as each team re-told their tall-tale golf stories of the week. The formal awards were given to each deserving player and the 2010 Bravado came to an end. Can’t wait until next year!
